Founded in 1995 in the heart of Long Street, Mama Africa was created as a celebration of South Africa’s new democracy and the rich diversity of the African continent. As Cape Town’s first authentic Pan-African restaurant, Mama's has always been more than a place to eat - it was envisioned as a gathering place where travellers and locals could come together through food, music, culture, and connection.
From the very beginning, the intention behind Mama Africa was simple: to give guests a true taste of Africa. Not just through the flavours on the plate, but through the feeling of the space itself. Over the years, Mama Africa became a Cape Town institution - known for bold Pan-African flavours, unforgettable nights, and an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in the city. In 2020, Mama Africa entered a new chapter under new management. While honouring the legacy and soul that built Mama, the space was reimagined with a refreshed vision and renewed energy. The menu expanded, the experience evolved, and Mama continued growing as a home that celebrates Africa in all its richness and diversity.
Today, Mama Africa remains a place where culture comes alive every night. Our live entertainment is at the heart of the experience - from the vibrant sounds of marimba bands and djembe drum circles to gumboot dancing, traditional performances, and unforgettable musical moments. Really enjoyed dining here. Very memorable experience from start to finish. Service was very good. Food choices were excellent. Plus entertainment was provided including a band, face painting and a drumming experience. Definitely recommend looking for a African dining experience.
